Draft Grade — Texans

The Texans let Gabriel fall into their laps, and walked away with a B-.

You could see the war room lean forward. Dillon Gabriel at pick 120 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.

If Dippre pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. That running back hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.

On the needs board they went 4 of 8, with interior defensive lineman the one that mattered most. Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.

In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.

Pick Analysis
Pick24 Rnd1 Harold Perkins Jr.
In Round 1, Pick 24 they get a green-dot type in the middle, outstanding value to boot.
Pick41 Rnd2 Abdul Carter
Abdul Carter in the Round 2 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The roster fit checks out.
Pick56 Rnd2 Xavier Watts
Nice patience on Xavier Watts, who had no business lasting to pick No. 56. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick88 Rnd3 Jason Marshall Jr.
Jason Marshall Jr. in the 88th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick120 Rnd4 Dillon Gabriel
They will replay Dillon Gabriel at pick 120 for years; that is how good the value is. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick155 Rnd5 Tonka Hemingway
Tonka Hemingway slipping to slot 155 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick216 Rnd7 CJ Dippre
This one needs a full-page explanation: CJ Dippre in No. 216, miles early. A need, and now a little less of one.
