Best value of the weekend goes to the Bears for Verse: A-. Whoever sat across the table from the Bears should ask for a receipt. They cleaned the room out, prying loose far more value than they gave up, and it was the quiet MVP of their weekend.
Getting Verse where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
The cost of the Powers-Johnson reach is exactly the players who went right after him. They left with edge rusher solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
The kind of weekend a front office frames and hangs on the wall.
Pick Analysis
Pick9
Rnd1
Olumuyiwa Fashanu
In slot 9 they get a long-term starter on the line. A real need, handled.
Pick13
Rnd1
Rome Odunze
In pick No. 13 they get a go-to option on the outside at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick46
Rnd2
Jared Verse
Jared Verse in pick 46 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick69
Rnd3
Jackson Powers-Johnson
The board had cheaper options than Jackson Powers-Johnson at No. 69, and it noticed. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick108
Rnd4
Roman Wilson
Roman Wilson at the 108th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick109
Rnd4
Donovan Jackson
A premium they did not need to pay, Donovan Jackson a notch or two before his time. The roster fit checks out.
Pick128
Rnd4
Max Melton
Nice patience on Max Melton, who had no business lasting to slot 128. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick142
Rnd5
Payton Wilson
By-the-book stuff, Payton Wilson at No. 142 squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick183
Rnd6
Ben Sinnott
A tight end of that caliber at pick 183 is the definition of value, full stop. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick226
Rnd7
Jalen Berger
They paid a round early for Jalen Berger in the 226th pick, more than the board wanted. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
