FutureA+
About as clean as a draft gets for the Panthers: A-. When the story of this class is written, it opens with Tyler Batty at pick 177, a reach of 60 spots that the board flatly disagrees with.
The Walker value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. The running back hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Dorian Williams pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns.
Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.
In the end it comes back to Nick Emmanwori, and a haul good enough to build on right away.
Pick Analysis
Pick30
Rnd1
Nick Emmanwori
In the 30th pick they get a rangy last line of defense, and a steal at that. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick45
Rnd2
Jalon Walker
A linebacker of that caliber at pick No. 45 is the definition of value, full stop. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick58
Rnd2
Donovan Ezeiruaku
Donovan Ezeiruaku at the Round 2 slot is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the edge rusher. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick74
Rnd3
Cameron Williams
A tidy little value on Cameron Williams in the 74th overall pick, a step better than break-even. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick109
Rnd4
Joshua Farmer
Joshua Farmer in slot 109 is fair value, right on his grade. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick111
Rnd4
Xavier Restrepo
Xavier Restrepo in Round 4, Pick 9 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick118
Rnd4
Dorian Strong
Dorian Strong at the Round 4 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick140
Rnd5
Kyle McCord
They will replay Kyle McCord at No. 140 for years; that is how good the value is. It fills a real need, too.
Pick146
Rnd5
Antwaun Powell-Ryland
Antwaun Powell-Ryland in pick No. 146 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick163
Rnd5
Andres Borregales
Value with a capital V on Andres Borregales in the 163rd pick, a genuine coup. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
Pick166
Rnd5
JJ Pegues
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for JJ Pegues. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick177
Rnd6
Tyler Batty
Value said wait; Tyler Batty in pick 177 says they were not listening. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
