Draft Grade — Texans
Overall D
ValueB NeedB TradesF FutureB-
A costly weekend of dealing drags the Texans to a D.

The Texans treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending Round 3, Pick 31 on James Williams a full 41 spots early.

The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

That is a wide receiver worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.

Pick Analysis
Pick23 Rnd1 Laiatu Latu
In slot 23 they get a disruptor off the edge, and a steal at that. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick59 Rnd2 Troy Franklin
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Troy Franklin in pick 59, plain and simple. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick61 Rnd2 Jeremiah Trotter Jr.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at pick No. 61 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick64 Rnd2 Cooper Beebe
Cooper Beebe in the 64th overall pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick85 Rnd3 Jonathon Brooks
They robbed the room for Jonathon Brooks here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick88 Rnd3 Josh Newton
Fair-plus on Josh Newton, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick91 Rnd3 Leonard Taylor III
Leonard Taylor III in Round 3, Pick 28 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick94 Rnd3 James Williams
James Williams at pick No. 94 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick124 Rnd4 Malik Washington
Malik Washington at the 124th overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick128 Rnd4 Jaheim Bell
A premium they did not need to pay, Jaheim Bell a notch or two before his time. The roster fit checks out.
Pick161 Rnd5 Edefuan Ulofoshio
Edefuan Ulofoshio in pick 161 is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick236 Rnd7 Jared Wiley
Somehow Jared Wiley was still sitting there in the Round 7 slot, and they pounced on premier tight end value. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick245 Rnd7 Myles Jones
Myles Jones slipping to the 245th pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
