FutureB-
A masterclass at the trade table lands the Lions a B+. They will call it conviction in the building and a reach everywhere else: Dominic Zvada, 48 picks early at the Round 7 slot. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B+.
On value alone, Everette makes the weekend a net positive. The phones were where this weekend was really won.
For all the activity, linebacker went untouched, which is hard to explain. The Andrew Van Ginkel pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick Analysis
Pick30
Rnd1
Caleb Lomu
They paid a round early for Caleb Lomu in the 30th pick, more than the board wanted. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick50
Rnd2
Jake Slaughter
Jake Slaughter in pick No. 50 lands just on the right side of the ledger. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick75
Rnd3
Domonique Orange
Domonique Orange in pick 75 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick87
Rnd3
Max Klare
You do not let a tight end like Max Klare reach No. 87 and blink. They did not. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick94
Rnd3
Daylen Everette
They will replay Daylen Everette at the Round 3 slot for years; that is how good the value is. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick118
Rnd4
Monroe Freeling
A straight-up fair deal on Monroe Freeling at Round 4, Pick 18, value and slot in agreement. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick155
Rnd5
Drew Allar
No edge and no loss on Drew Allar in pick No. 155; it is a wash and a sensible one. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick173
Rnd5
Jalen Stroman
Good price on Jalen Stroman in No. 173, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick209
Rnd6
Patrick Payton
A real head-scratcher, Patrick Payton in the Round 6 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick222
Rnd7
Evan Stewart
They read the board right and Evan Stewart was the payoff at pick 222. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick246
Rnd7
Dominic Zvada
A big swing on Dominic Zvada at the 246th overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
