Draft Grade — Vikings
Overall B
ValueB NeedB TradesA- FutureB
Quarterback settled, McCarthy in the fold, and a B for the Vikings.

Start where it matters. The Vikings took J.J. McCarthy to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one.

The Jones value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. The Vikings indulged a want in Solomon while a need in edge rusher stayed open. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.

They are betting Wingo proves the room right and everyone else wrong.

Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.

Pick Analysis
Pick23 Rnd1 J.J. McCarthy
In the 23rd overall pick they get a long-term answer under center. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick36 Rnd2 Ennis Rakestraw Jr.
No edge and no loss on Ennis Rakestraw Jr. in Round 2, Pick 4; it is a wash and a sensible one. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick40 Rnd2 Ladd McConkey
Nothing to complain about; Ladd McConkey went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick48 Rnd2 Cooper Beebe
They took Cooper Beebe at par in No. 48, which is nothing to complain about. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick100 Rnd3 Mekhi Wingo
They paid a round early for Mekhi Wingo in slot 100, more than the board wanted. It fills a real need, too.
Pick108 Rnd4 Zak Zinter
Fair-plus on Zak Zinter, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick129 Rnd4 Javon Solomon
A surprising call. With edge rusher still to address, they spent the Round 4 slot on Javon Solomon, an OLB-EDGE they were not short of.
Pick157 Rnd5 Beau Brade
Beau Brade at the 157th pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick167 Rnd5 Dillon Johnson
A straight-up fair deal on Dillon Johnson at pick 167, value and slot in agreement. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick177 Rnd6 Dwight McGlothern
They read the board right and Dwight McGlothern was the payoff at slot 177. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick230 Rnd7 Trente Jones
Trente Jones in the 230th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick232 Rnd7 Tanner McLachlan
They will replay Tanner McLachlan at pick No. 232 for years; that is how good the value is. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
