FutureB+
Nobody dealt better than the 49ers this weekend: B+. The 49ers did not so much draft Thor Griffith as overpay for him, 60 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. No fireworks, but a solid B+.
The Hudson pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class.
Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Job largely done: offensive lineman settled and 6 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick12
Rnd1
Armand Membou
In the 12th pick they get a building block for the line. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick43
Rnd2
JT Tuimoloau
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on JT Tuimoloau. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick76
Rnd3
Cam Skattebo
Cam Skattebo in the 76th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick100
Rnd3
Jared Wilson
They took Jared Wilson at par in the Round 3 slot, which is nothing to complain about. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick113
Rnd4
Jackson Slater
Jackson Slater in pick No. 113 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick138
Rnd4
Vernon Broughton
Vernon Broughton at slot 138 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick147
Rnd5
Mello Dotson
Mello Dotson slipping to pick 147 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick149
Rnd5
Malachi Moore
They read the board right and Malachi Moore was the payoff at the 149th pick. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick160
Rnd5
CJ West
A swing that ignored the value entirely, CJ West well ahead of where he belonged. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick227
Rnd7
Teddye Buchanan
They reached into another round for Teddye Buchanan, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick249
Rnd7
Kobe Hudson
Taking Kobe Hudson in slot 249 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick252
Rnd7
Thor Griffith
A wild overpay on Thor Griffith in Round 7, Pick 36, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
