Tackle Ted DRAFTING FOR THE49ers
Draft Selections
Draft Grade — 49ers

The 49ers did the meat-and-potatoes work well: B-. You build a draft on nights like this. Jake Slaughter had no business being available in No. 54, and the 49ers did the only sane thing and turned in the card. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
Every board in the league had Capehart lower, and that gap is the story. That running back hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with offensive lineman chief among the fixes. The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the running back spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick23
Rnd1
Caleb Lomu
In pick No. 23 they get an anchor for the offensive line, a steep price for the projection. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick54
Rnd2
Jake Slaughter
Circle this one: Jake Slaughter at pick 54 is a fall that decides a draft. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick85
Rnd3
Caleb Tiernan
No drama and no debate, Caleb Tiernan went about where he belonged in No. 85. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick123
Rnd4
Jaishawn Barham
A straight-up fair deal on Jaishawn Barham at pick No. 123, value and slot in agreement. The roster fit checks out.
Pick135
Rnd4
DeMonte Capehart
A wild overpay on DeMonte Capehart in the Round 4 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick139
Rnd4
Eugene Wilson III
Eugene Wilson III at pick 139 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick140
Rnd4
Ar'maj Reed-Adams
A reach on Ar'maj Reed-Adams in the 140th pick; the board had better options right there. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
