Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall D+
ValueB+ NeedB TradesF FutureA
A costly weekend of dealing drags the Cowboys to a D+.

The Cowboys spent real capital to be 76 picks early on Garrett Dellinger, and the board is going to hold them to it. The process wobbled, and the D+ is where it lands.

The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. Leaving cornerback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Watts.

Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, cornerback very much included.

Pick Analysis
Pick4 Rnd1 Ashton Jeanty
In Round 1, Pick 4 they get a featured back. A real need, handled.
Pick13 Rnd1 Emeka Egbuka
In the 13th pick they get a matchup problem out wide at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick36 Rnd2 Abdul Carter
They robbed the room for Abdul Carter here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A minor itch, scratched.
Pick44 Rnd2 Harold Fannin Jr.
Taking Harold Fannin Jr. in slot 44 is close to grand larceny; a tight end that good had no business lasting this long. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick67 Rnd3 Armand Membou
Steal is underselling it; Armand Membou at the Round 3 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick78 Rnd3 Xavier Watts
Xavier Watts in No. 78 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick83 Rnd3 Smael Mondon Jr.
Smael Mondon Jr. at the 83rd pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick150 Rnd5 Michael Taaffe
Michael Taaffe in Round 5, Pick 12 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick169 Rnd5 Patrick Payton
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Patrick Payton in slot 169. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick170 Rnd5 Le'Veon Moss
They barely believed it either: Le'Veon Moss still on the board at the Round 5 slot. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick171 Rnd5 Garrett Dellinger
They talked themselves into Garrett Dellinger at pick No. 171, and the board did not agree. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick190 Rnd6 Cashius Howell
Cashius Howell in the 190th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick209 Rnd6 Jared Wilson
Jared Wilson slipping to pick 209 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
