Draft Grade — Bears
Overall D
ValueC+ NeedB- TradesF FutureA+
The Bears finally solved quarterback, and it carried them to a D.

The Bears spent real capital to be 41 picks early on Tate Ratledge, and the board is going to hold them to it.

Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. So much rides on Bo Nix that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him.

It is not that Smith is a bad player; it is that the Bears had louder needs to answer first. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

They banked enough surplus on Harris to cover a lot of smaller sins.

Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, interior defensive lineman very much included.

Pick Analysis
Pick13 Rnd1 Xavier Legette
A straight-up fair deal on Xavier Legette at pick No. 13, value and slot in agreement. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick16 Rnd1 Bo Nix
In the Round 1 slot they get their guy under center for the next decade at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick17 Rnd1 Tyler Nubin
In the 17th overall pick they get a rangy last line of defense. Need was not the driver here.
Pick25 Rnd1 JT Tuimoloau
They paid a round early for JT Tuimoloau in No. 25, more than the board wanted. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick48 Rnd2 Javon Foster
They took Javon Foster at par in the 48th pick, which is nothing to complain about. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick69 Rnd3 Sedrick Van Pran
No edge and no loss on Sedrick Van Pran in Round 3, Pick 5; it is a wash and a sensible one. The roster fit checks out.
Pick71 Rnd3 Maason Smith
A curious use of pick 71. Interior defensive lineman needed the pick; a DT-EDGE in Maason Smith did not.
Pick74 Rnd3 Tate Ratledge
Tate Ratledge at No. 74 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It fills a real need, too.
Pick105 Rnd4 Khyree Jackson
A wild overpay on Khyree Jackson in the 105th overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick128 Rnd4 Payton Wilson
A reach on Payton Wilson in pick No. 128; the board had better options right there. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick142 Rnd5 Theo Johnson
This one needs a full-page explanation: Theo Johnson in slot 142, miles early. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick183 Rnd6 Tre Harris
A slide stopped in the Round 6 slot, with Tre Harris worth more than the price. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick226 Rnd7 Frank Gore Jr.
They talked themselves into Frank Gore Jr. at the 226th pick, and the board did not agree. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick228 Rnd7 De'Corian Clark
Quietly one of the better values of the day, De'Corian Clark at Round 7, Pick 8. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
