Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall
B-
ValueC
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
The Commanders left with their quarterback, and a B- to match. The Commanders treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending pick No. 100 on Devaughn Vele a full 206 spots early. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
They have staked the next five years on Jayden Daniels, which is the only story that really matters here. They banked enough surplus on James to cover a lot of smaller sins.
For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick2
Rnd1
Jayden Daniels
In the Round 1 slot they get a passer to set the clock by. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick36
Rnd2
Ladd McConkey
Ladd McConkey at Round 2, Pick 4 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick50
Rnd2
Bucky Irving
A real head-scratcher, Bucky Irving in slot 50 is miles ahead of his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
Pick53
Rnd2
Zach Frazier
Zach Frazier in the 53rd pick is fair value, right on his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick67
Rnd3
Roger Rosengarten
Roger Rosengarten at No. 67 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick100
Rnd3
Devaughn Vele
Devaughn Vele in pick 100 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick139
Rnd5
DJ James
Somehow DJ James was still sitting there in pick No. 139, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick161
Rnd5
Erick All
You do not let a tight end like Erick All reach No. 161 and blink. They did not. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick222
Rnd7
David Ugwoegbu
Value said wait; David Ugwoegbu in slot 222 says they were not listening. The roster logic is harder to follow.
