The 49ers worked the phones like thieves and earned a B+. The tape said wait; the 49ers did not. Xavier Truss went at the 252nd overall pick, a good 57 picks before the board was ready. Good, not great, and the B+ says as much.
The Sanders pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. The phones were where this weekend was really won. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Myles Bryant gives the group a proven body among the projects.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick26
Rnd1
Kenneth Grant
In No. 26 they get an anchor for the defensive front at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick27
Rnd1
Nick Emmanwori
In pick No. 27 they get a centerfielder for the defense. More want than need.
Pick33
Rnd2
Derrick Harmon
Derrick Harmon at slot 33 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick60
Rnd2
Bradyn Swinson
They paid sticker price for Bradyn Swinson in the 60th overall pick, and that is fine. The roster fit checks out.
Pick73
Rnd3
Jayden Higgins
Jayden Higgins in Round 3, Pick 9 lands just on the right side of the ledger. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick94
Rnd3
Ozzy Trapilo
Ozzy Trapilo at the 94th pick is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick100
Rnd3
Chris Paul Jr.
They barely believed it either: Chris Paul Jr. still on the board at the 100th pick. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick113
Rnd4
Jared Wilson
Jared Wilson is a better player than slot 113 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick138
Rnd4
Jamaree Caldwell
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Jamaree Caldwell at pick 138. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick147
Rnd5
Cam Skattebo
Cam Skattebo in Round 5, Pick 9 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick160
Rnd5
Jeffrey Bassa
You do not let a linebacker like Jeffrey Bassa reach the 160th overall pick and blink. They did not. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick170
Rnd5
Nohl Williams
They robbed the room for Nohl Williams here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick173
Rnd5
Oronde Gadsden II
A wild overpay on Oronde Gadsden II in pick No. 173, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick227
Rnd7
Raheim Sanders
Steal is underselling it; Raheim Sanders at the Round 7 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick249
Rnd7
Hayden Conner
Hayden Conner in the Round 7 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick252
Rnd7
Xavier Truss
A real head-scratcher, Xavier Truss in pick No. 252 is miles ahead of his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
