Draft Grade — Bengals

Nobody dealt better than the Bengals this weekend: B.

The Bengals put a flag in the ground for Will Putnam, 42 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit.

They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. The Smith pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with interior defensive lineman and quarterback still on the board.

The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.

Pick Analysis
Pick18 Rnd1 Amarius Mims
In the 18th overall pick they get a long-term starter on the line at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick27 Rnd1 Tyler Nubin
In pick No. 27 they get an enforcer at safety. More want than need.
Pick49 Rnd2 Ja'Lynn Polk
Ja'Lynn Polk at slot 49 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick80 Rnd3 Maason Smith
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending pick 80 on Maason Smith with interior defensive lineman and quarterback unsolved.
Pick115 Rnd4 Cedric Gray
They jumped the gun on Cedric Gray, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It fills a real need, too.
Pick151 Rnd5 Jaylin Simpson
They did well to land Jaylin Simpson in the 151st pick, just ahead of his grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick173 Rnd5 Isaiah Davis
Isaiah Davis in the 173rd overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick196 Rnd6 AJ Barner
AJ Barner is a better player than No. 196 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick238 Rnd7 Joshua Cephus
Joshua Cephus slid further than he should have, and pick 238 is lovely value for the wide receiver. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick254 Rnd7 Will Putnam
A big swing on Will Putnam at the Round 7 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
