Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall A-
ValueC+ NeedB TradesA+ FutureA+
Quarterback settled, McCarthy in the fold, and a A- for the Patriots.

They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. J.J. McCarthy is the Patriots' quarterback, full stop.

Every board in the league had Gore Jr. lower, and that gap is the story. They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own.

The Jones pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots. For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.

Bottom line, with J.J. McCarthy leading the way, this is a class that should pay off fast and rarely be regretted.

Pick Analysis
Pick18 Rnd1 J.J. McCarthy
In pick No. 18 they get a passer to set the clock by, though they paid up to get him. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick22 Rnd1 Adonai Mitchell
In No. 22 they get a weapon on the perimeter, reach and all. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick34 Rnd2 Jordan Morgan
Jordan Morgan in pick 34 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick68 Rnd3 Patrick Paul
No edge and no loss on Patrick Paul in Round 3, Pick 4; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick84 Rnd3 Ja'Lynn Polk
They read the board right and Ja'Lynn Polk was the payoff at the Round 3 slot. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick96 Rnd3 Theo Johnson
This one needs a full-page explanation: Theo Johnson in slot 96, miles early. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick103 Rnd4 Cam Hart
Cam Hart in the 103rd pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick119 Rnd4 Elijah Jones
A surprising call. With edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots still to address, they spent the 119th overall pick on Elijah Jones, a cornerback they were not short of.
Pick137 Rnd5 Trevor Keegan
They took Trevor Keegan at par in No. 137, which is nothing to complain about. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick149 Rnd5 Tommy Eichenberg
Good price on Tommy Eichenberg in pick 149, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick193 Rnd6 Cornelius Johnson
They did well to land Cornelius Johnson in pick No. 193, just ahead of his grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick194 Rnd6 Frank Gore Jr.
Frank Gore Jr. at the 194th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick231 Rnd7 Bub Means
A reach on Bub Means in Round 7, Pick 11; the board had better options right there. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
