Grand theft in the 51st pick: the Patriots steal Loveland and grade out a B-. You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Patriots did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Loveland. The cost of the Sorrell reach is exactly the players who went right after him. That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick20
Rnd1
James Pearce Jr.
In the 20th overall pick they get a disruptor off the edge at a price that makes it sweeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick38
Rnd2
Nick Emmanwori
A safety of that caliber at the Round 2 slot is the definition of value, full stop. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick45
Rnd2
Grey Zabel
A tidy bit of business in pick 45, where Grey Zabel graded well above the range. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick51
Rnd2
Colston Loveland
Colston Loveland in Round 2, Pick 19 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The roster fit checks out.
Pick69
Rnd3
Elic Ayomanor
Elic Ayomanor at No. 69 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick77
Rnd3
Darien Porter
They took Darien Porter at par in slot 77, which is nothing to complain about. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick79
Rnd3
Cam Skattebo
Cam Skattebo in the 79th overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick106
Rnd4
Ozzy Trapilo
Somehow Ozzy Trapilo was still sitting there in the 106th pick, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick144
Rnd5
Barryn Sorrell
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Barryn Sorrell well ahead of where he belonged. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick238
Rnd7
Ja'Quinden Jackson
They read the board right and Ja'Quinden Jackson was the payoff at No. 238. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
