Draft Grade — Patriots
Overall B-
ValueB NeedB TradesB- FutureB-
Nothing loud, just a tidy B- for the Patriots.

You can hear the double-takes from here. The Patriots took Patrick Payton at the 189th overall pick, roughly 58 spots before his name belonged. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.

That is an offensive lineman worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want. The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.

Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Pick Analysis
Pick31 Rnd1 Olaivavega Ioane
In No. 31 they get an anchor for the offensive line at fair value.
Pick63 Rnd2 Sonny Styles
Sonny Styles at pick 63 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick95 Rnd3 Mikail Kamara
Mikail Kamara in the Round 3 slot is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick125 Rnd4 Dametrious Crownover
They paid up for Dametrious Crownover at the 125th overall pick when waiting would have done the job. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick131 Rnd4 Michael Trigg
Nice patience on Michael Trigg, who had no business lasting to slot 131. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick169 Rnd5 Aaron Anderson
Aaron Anderson in pick No. 169 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick189 Rnd6 Patrick Payton
Value said wait; Patrick Payton in pick No. 189 says they were not listening. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick200 Rnd6 Aaron Graves
Circle this one: Aaron Graves at No. 200 is a fall that decides a draft. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick207 Rnd6 Bud Clark
Bud Clark in the 207th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick210 Rnd6 Aamil Wagner
The board fumbled Aamil Wagner all the way to the Round 6 slot, and they scooped it up. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick247 Rnd7 Andre Fuller
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Andre Fuller in slot 247. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
