Draft Grade — Chargers
Overall B-
ValueC NeedB TradesB+ FutureB-
The Chargers checked most of the boxes and earned a B-.

Nobody had Tyler Johnson this high, and it is not close. The Chargers reached 111 spots to get him at No. 256. The bottom line is a respectable B-.

However the rest shakes out, Taaffe at that price is a win they earned. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it. The trade work was a quiet net positive.

They left with edge rusher solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.

Pick Analysis
Pick28 Rnd1 Anthony Hill Jr.
In No. 28 they get a green-dot type in the middle, outstanding value to boot. More want than need.
Pick55 Rnd2 Jonah Coleman
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jonah Coleman. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick92 Rnd3 Gabe Jacas
A straight-up fair deal on Gabe Jacas at Round 3, Pick 28, value and slot in agreement. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick96 Rnd3 Michael Taaffe
Somehow Michael Taaffe was still sitting there in the Round 3 slot, and they pounced on premier safety value. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick97 Rnd3 Evan Stewart
Evan Stewart at pick No. 97 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick123 Rnd4 Iapani Laloulu
They paid up for Iapani Laloulu at the 123rd overall pick when waiting would have done the job. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick138 Rnd4 Luke Hasz
Luke Hasz in Round 4, Pick 36 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It fills a real need, too.
Pick144 Rnd5 Davison Igbinosun
A real head-scratcher, Davison Igbinosun in pick No. 144 is miles ahead of his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick162 Rnd5 Jermaine Mathews Jr.
They went early on Jermaine Mathews Jr. in No. 162, and the value did not follow. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick167 Rnd5 DJ Campbell
DJ Campbell at pick 167 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick201 Rnd6 Daevin Hobbs
This one needs a full-page explanation: Daevin Hobbs in the Round 6 slot, miles early. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick236 Rnd7 Anthony Evans III
Anthony Evans III at the 236th overall pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick256 Rnd7 Tyler Johnson
Tyler Johnson at the 256th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
