FutureB+
The Patriots lost the trade table, and the C+ tells the story. Thirty-one other rooms let Colston Loveland slide, and the Patriots were the ones holding the card at the Round 2 slot. Highway robbery. Call it a C+ and check back in two years.
They are betting Oladejo proves the room right and everyone else wrong. The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. They went 8 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Not a disaster, not a triumph, just a middling class.
Pick Analysis
Pick14
Rnd1
Will Campbell
Will Campbell in pick 14 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick45
Rnd2
Jalon Walker
They will replay Jalon Walker at Round 2, Pick 13 for years; that is how good the value is. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick58
Rnd2
Colston Loveland
You do not let a tight end like Colston Loveland reach the Round 2 slot and blink. They did not. The roster fit checks out.
Pick69
Rnd3
Jalen Royals
A clean, defensible pick in Round 3, Pick 5 with a little surplus value in Jalen Royals. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick77
Rnd3
Andrew Mukuba
A straight-up fair deal on Andrew Mukuba at slot 77, value and slot in agreement. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick106
Rnd4
Oluwafemi Oladejo
Oluwafemi Oladejo at pick 106 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick144
Rnd5
Trevor Etienne
By-the-book stuff, Trevor Etienne at the 144th pick squarely in line with his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick171
Rnd5
JJ Pegues
A conviction pick on JJ Pegues at pick No. 171 that the board grades a round light. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick220
Rnd7
Ricky White III
They paid sticker price for Ricky White III in the 220th overall pick, and that is fine. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick238
Rnd7
Donovan Smith
They reached into another round for Donovan Smith, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
