FutureA+
The phones sank the Falcons this weekend: D+. The Falcons treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending No. 226 on Dayon Hayes a full 87 spots early. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D+.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. For all the activity, running back went untouched, which is hard to explain. They banked enough surplus on Shough to cover a lot of smaller sins.
Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and running back is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick27
Rnd1
Kenneth Grant
In slot 27 they get a pocket-collapsing interior rusher. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick33
Rnd2
Matthew Golden
Matthew Golden at the 33rd overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick46
Rnd2
Malaki Starks
They barely believed it either: Malaki Starks still on the board at Round 2, Pick 14. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Pick59
Rnd2
Marcus Mbow
They read the board right and Marcus Mbow was the payoff at No. 59. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick104
Rnd4
Smael Mondon Jr.
They paid sticker price for Smael Mondon Jr. in pick 104, and that is fine. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick118
Rnd4
Denzel Burke
Nothing to complain about; Denzel Burke went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick165
Rnd5
Tyler Shough
They will replay Tyler Shough at pick 165 for years; that is how good the value is. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick200
Rnd6
Luke Lachey
Luke Lachey in the 200th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick218
Rnd7
Drew Kendall
Drew Kendall in pick No. 218 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick226
Rnd7
Dayon Hayes
They left a pile of value on the table to take Dayon Hayes this early at the 226th pick. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick257
Rnd7
Shilo Sanders
A real head-scratcher, Shilo Sanders in the Round 7 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
