FutureB-
The 49ers got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the D-. There is reaching, and then there is Jay Toia at Round 7, Pick 36. The 49ers jumped the board by 114 and dared it to prove them wrong. The math is unkind, and the D- follows.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. That Williams pick is the receipt they will wave around later. The Jalen Ramsey pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns.
They left with offensive lineman solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.
Pick Analysis
Pick27
Rnd1
Landon Jackson
In the 27th pick they get juice off the edge, reach and all. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick43
Rnd2
Jonah Savaiinaea
Jonah Savaiinaea in the 43rd overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick59
Rnd2
Omarr Norman-Lott
They paid up for Omarr Norman-Lott at pick No. 59 when waiting would have done the job. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick75
Rnd3
Danny Stutsman
They went early on Danny Stutsman in pick 75, and the value did not follow. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick98
Rnd3
Jared Wilson
They paid sticker price for Jared Wilson in Round 3, Pick 34, and that is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick100
Rnd3
Savion Williams
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Savion Williams in No. 100. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick113
Rnd4
Brashard Smith
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Brashard Smith. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick135
Rnd4
Riley Leonard
Riley Leonard at the Round 4 slot nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick138
Rnd4
Logan Brown
No edge and no loss on Logan Brown in the 138th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick147
Rnd5
Tyler Baron
A premium they did not need to pay, Tyler Baron a notch or two before his time. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick151
Rnd5
JJ Pegues
They reached into another round for JJ Pegues, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick160
Rnd5
Vernon Broughton
A big swing on Vernon Broughton at pick 160, well ahead of any board in the building. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick183
Rnd6
Caleb Rogers
Value said wait; Caleb Rogers in the 183rd pick says they were not listening. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick189
Rnd6
KeAndre Lambert-Smith
The board had cheaper options than KeAndre Lambert-Smith at pick No. 189, and it noticed. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick227
Rnd7
Desmond Watson
Desmond Watson in No. 227 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick231
Rnd7
Nick Martin
This one needs a full-page explanation: Nick Martin in Round 7, Pick 15, miles early. It fills a real need, too.
Pick232
Rnd7
Shilo Sanders
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Shilo Sanders well ahead of where he belonged. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick243
Rnd7
Jaylin Smith
A reach for Jaylin Smith in slot 243; a little patience would have been rewarded. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick249
Rnd7
Joshua Simon
They left a pile of value on the table to take Joshua Simon this early at the Round 7 slot. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick252
Rnd7
Jay Toia
Jay Toia in the 252nd overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
