Draft Grade — Chiefs
Overall C+
ValueB NeedB TradesD- FutureB-
Thornton Jr. should have been long gone. The Chiefs pounced, and earned a C+.

The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Chiefs watched Dont'e Thornton Jr. slide 55 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. Some smart calls, some head-scratchers, and a C+ in the wash.

Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through tight end.

The Joe Alt deal gives the class an established piece to lean on.

In the end, a coin-flip class: fine today, with a wide range of outcomes ahead.

Pick Analysis
Pick47 Rnd2 Jihaad Campbell
They did well to land Jihaad Campbell in slot 47, just ahead of his grade. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick63 Rnd2 Alfred Collins
Alfred Collins at the 63rd pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The roster fit checks out.
Pick66 Rnd3 Tate Ratledge
Tate Ratledge at pick 66 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick95 Rnd3 Ozzy Trapilo
Ozzy Trapilo in Round 3, Pick 31 lands just on the right side of the ledger. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick132 Rnd4 Darius Alexander
A clean, defensible pick in pick No. 132 with a little surplus value in Darius Alexander. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick167 Rnd5 Dorian Strong
Dorian Strong in No. 167 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick229 Rnd7 Dont'e Thornton Jr.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. at the 229th overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick256 Rnd7 Maxen Hook
Nothing to complain about; Maxen Hook went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
