You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The 49ers did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high.

That Magee pick is the receipt they will wave around later. Leaving running back unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The Green pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with running back, interior defensive lineman and other spots still on the board.

It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.

There is no soft landing here; this class has to massively overperform just to matter.
