Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall D+
ValueB NeedB+ TradesF FutureA
The 49ers robbed the room for Laube. Final grade: D+.

The phones were a trap the 49ers kept walking into, shipping out surplus on nearly every deal. The math is unkind, and the D+ follows.

They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it. They are betting Bertrand proves the room right and everyone else wrong. The Laube pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.

On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with offensive lineman the one that mattered most.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.

Pick Analysis
Pick12 Rnd1 Olumuyiwa Fashanu
In No. 12 they get a blindside protector at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick31 Rnd1 Graham Barton
In Round 1, Pick 31 they get a cornerstone up front. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick63 Rnd2 Braden Fiske
Braden Fiske at slot 63 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the interior defensive lineman. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick76 Rnd3 Devontez Walker
Devontez Walker at the Round 3 slot nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick94 Rnd3 Brenden Rice
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Brenden Rice. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick124 Rnd4 Mekhi Wingo
Mekhi Wingo slipping to the 124th pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick131 Rnd4 Sataoa Laumea
The board had Sataoa Laumea higher than the 131st overall pick, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick133 Rnd4 Josh Newton
A tidy bit of business in the Round 4 slot, where Josh Newton graded well above the range. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick176 Rnd6 Dylan Laube
Taking Dylan Laube in pick 176 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick211 Rnd6 JD Bertrand
JD Bertrand at slot 211 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. The roster fit checks out.
Pick215 Rnd6 Julian Pearl
Nice patience on Julian Pearl, who had no business lasting to No. 215. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick251 Rnd7 Jalen Sundell
A clean, defensible pick in the 251st pick with a little surplus value in Jalen Sundell. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
