FutureB-
A solid, sensible weekend for the Patriots: B-. When the story of this class is written, it opens with Luke Lachey at Round 5, Pick 10, a reach of 58 spots that the board flatly disagrees with. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
Bowman Jr. falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it.
They were the ones paying the moving tax this weekend. They went 7 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick Analysis
Pick10
Rnd1
Ashton Jeanty
In No. 10 they get a workhorse for the backfield. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick38
Rnd2
Aireontae Ersery
Aireontae Ersery in the 38th pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick39
Rnd2
Jalon Walker
Jalon Walker slid further than he should have, and the Round 2 slot is lovely value for the linebacker. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick69
Rnd3
Tre Harris
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Tre Harris at slot 69. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick106
Rnd4
Charles Grant
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Charles Grant at the 106th overall pick is the proof. It fills a real need, too.
Pick144
Rnd5
Billy Bowman Jr.
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Billy Bowman Jr. in pick 144, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick148
Rnd5
Luke Lachey
Luke Lachey at the 148th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick217
Rnd7
Donovan Smith
A big swing on Donovan Smith at pick 217, well ahead of any board in the building. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick220
Rnd7
Antwane Wells Jr.
Antwane Wells Jr. at slot 220 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick238
Rnd7
Cam Jackson
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 7 slot with a little surplus value in Cam Jackson. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
