FutureB-
A costly weekend of dealing drags the Bills to a D-. There is conviction, and then there is this. The Bills took Kimani Vidal a full 48 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. A D- that will need time and luck to look better.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.
Landing Johnson that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. They went 7 of 9 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, quarterback very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick38
Rnd2
Xavier Legette
Xavier Legette at the 38th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick60
Rnd2
Braden Fiske
A clean, defensible pick in No. 60 with a little surplus value in Braden Fiske. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick71
Rnd3
Marshawn Kneeland
They went early on Marshawn Kneeland in pick 71, and the value did not follow. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick106
Rnd4
Cole Bishop
They paid sticker price for Cole Bishop in slot 106, and that is fine. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick128
Rnd4
James Williams
Good price on James Williams in Round 4, Pick 28, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick134
Rnd4
Nehemiah Pritchett
A reach for Nehemiah Pritchett in the Round 4 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick144
Rnd5
Jacob Cowing
Jacob Cowing at the Round 5 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick163
Rnd5
Tanor Bortolini
Tanor Bortolini at Round 5, Pick 27 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick189
Rnd6
Khristian Boyd
They let Khristian Boyd come to them and pounced at pick 189. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick200
Rnd6
Cornelius Johnson
Cornelius Johnson at the 200th overall pick is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick204
Rnd6
Kimani Vidal
Kimani Vidal at the 204th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A need, and now a little less of one.
