Draft Grade — 49ers
Overall D-
ValueC+ NeedB TradesF FutureB-
The 49ers got the worse of every deal, and it shows in the D-.

Nobody had Devin Culp this high, and it is not close. The 49ers reached 54 spots to get him at the 249th overall pick.

They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. The running back hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The 49ers indulged a want in Pritchett while a need in running back and edge rusher stayed open.

Whatever else happened, they won the night they took McCaffrey.

Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.

Pick Analysis
Pick31 Rnd1 Jackson Powers-Johnson
In pick No. 31 they get protection for the quarterback at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick37 Rnd2 Adonai Mitchell
Adonai Mitchell at pick 37 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick63 Rnd2 Payton Wilson
A tidy little value on Payton Wilson in the 63rd pick, a step better than break-even. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick69 Rnd3 Christian Mahogany
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Christian Mahogany well ahead of where he belonged. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick94 Rnd3 Cole Bishop
They liked Cole Bishop enough to skip the value, taking him in slot 94. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick110 Rnd4 Theo Johnson
Theo Johnson at the Round 4 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick124 Rnd4 Jarrian Jones
A reach for Jarrian Jones in Round 4, Pick 24; a little patience would have been rewarded. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick131 Rnd4 Nehemiah Pritchett
A want over a need in pick No. 131: Nehemiah Pritchett adds a cornerback while running back and edge rusher keeps waiting.
Pick133 Rnd4 Mason McCormick
Mason McCormick at the 133rd overall pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick164 Rnd5 Luke McCaffrey
Value with a capital V on Luke McCaffrey in pick 164, a genuine coup. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick176 Rnd6 Fabien Lovett
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Fabien Lovett. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick215 Rnd6 Ryan Flournoy
A quiet steal in the Round 6 slot: Ryan Flournoy for less than the market said. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick249 Rnd7 Devin Culp
They reached a country mile for Devin Culp at No. 249, and the board is aghast. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick251 Rnd7 Taulia Tagovailoa
Taulia Tagovailoa at the 251st pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
