Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall D+
ValueB+ NeedB+ TradesF FutureA+
Grand theft in pick No. 58: the Commanders steal Hampton and grade out a D+.

The Commanders lost the trade war and it was not close, handing partners the better end again and again.

Reaching for McLeod left real value on the table behind him. They banked enough surplus on Hampton to cover a lot of smaller sins. The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.

Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.

Pick Analysis
Pick12 Rnd1 Kelvin Banks Jr.
In Round 1, Pick 12 they get a long-term starter on the line. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick29 Rnd1 Tyler Warren
They let Tyler Warren come to them and pounced at pick 29. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick35 Rnd2 Shavon Revel Jr.
A slide stopped in the 35th overall pick, with Shavon Revel Jr. worth more than the price. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick58 Rnd2 Omarion Hampton
Omarion Hampton at No. 58 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick76 Rnd3 Darien Porter
They took Darien Porter at par in the Round 3 slot, which is nothing to complain about. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick94 Rnd3 Danny Stutsman
Value with a capital V on Danny Stutsman in the 94th pick, a genuine coup. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick103 Rnd4 Kevin Winston Jr.
Kevin Winston Jr. in Round 4, Pick 1 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick109 Rnd4 Tai Felton
Tai Felton slipping to slot 109 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick120 Rnd4 Tyler Shough
Tyler Shough in pick No. 120 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick128 Rnd4 Lathan Ransom
Lathan Ransom in pick 128 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick141 Rnd5 Ty Hamilton
Nice patience on Ty Hamilton, who had no business lasting to the 141st pick. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick166 Rnd5 Bhayshul Tuten
A quiet steal in the Round 5 slot: Bhayshul Tuten for less than the market said. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick167 Rnd5 Seth McLaughlin
Seth McLaughlin in the 167th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick178 Rnd6 Chase Lundt
Chase Lundt at No. 178 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick188 Rnd6 Jalen McLeod
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jalen McLeod in the Round 6 slot, miles early. The roster fit checks out.
Pick205 Rnd6 Dont'e Thornton Jr.
The board fumbled Dont'e Thornton Jr. all the way to Round 6, Pick 29, and they scooped it up. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick245 Rnd7 Desmond Watson
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Desmond Watson at pick No. 245 is the proof. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
