Draft Grade — Cowboys

The phones sank the Cowboys this weekend: D.

You can hear the double-takes from here. The Cowboys took J.J. Weaver at the Round 7 slot, roughly 84 spots before his name belonged.

The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. However the rest shakes out, Rouse at that price is a win they earned. The tight end spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.

A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.

Pick Analysis
Pick19 Rnd1 Amarius Mims
In pick No. 19 they get a long-term starter on the line at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick23 Rnd1 Adonai Mitchell
In Round 1, Pick 23 they get a go-to option on the outside, even if it was a touch early. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick24 Rnd1 T'Vondre Sweat
In No. 24 they get a pocket-collapsing interior rusher, though the board says they badly overpaid. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick56 Rnd2 Jonathon Brooks
Value with a capital V on Jonathon Brooks in pick 56, a genuine coup. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick87 Rnd3 Michael Pratt
A real head-scratcher, Michael Pratt in the 87th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick108 Rnd4 Johnny Wilson
Johnny Wilson in the 108th overall pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick132 Rnd4 Hunter Nourzad
This one needs a full-page explanation: Hunter Nourzad in the 132nd pick, miles early. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick157 Rnd5 James Williams
James Williams in pick No. 157 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick159 Rnd5 Nehemiah Pritchett
Nehemiah Pritchett slipping to pick 159 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick173 Rnd5 Jalyx Hunt
Circle this one: Jalyx Hunt at No. 173 is a fall that decides a draft. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick174 Rnd5 Jase McClellan
Jase McClellan in the 174th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick209 Rnd6 Ryan Watts
Ryan Watts at Round 6, Pick 34 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick213 Rnd6 Walter Rouse
Taking Walter Rouse in slot 213 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick216 Rnd6 Bub Means
They left a pile of value on the table to take Bub Means this early at the Round 6 slot. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick230 Rnd7 Fabien Lovett
Fabien Lovett in the Round 7 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick233 Rnd7 J.J. Weaver
They reached into another round for J.J. Weaver, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
