Overall B-

A solid, sensible weekend for the Jaguars: B-.

It is a puzzling start. The Jaguars had quarterback to solve and reached instead for Maason Smith, a DT-EDGE, at the 79th overall pick.

Reaching for Allen left real value on the table behind him. Getting Rosengarten where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.

The offense got the lion's share of the attention.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.

Pick Analysis
Pick21 Rnd1 Brian Thomas Jr.
In the 21st pick they get a go-to option on the outside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick48 Rnd2 Kingsley Suamataia
They went early on Kingsley Suamataia in pick No. 48, and the value did not follow. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick79 Rnd3 Maason Smith
A want over a need in the 79th pick: Maason Smith adds a DT-EDGE while quarterback keeps waiting.
Pick85 Rnd3 Braelon Allen
Braelon Allen at Round 3, Pick 22 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick96 Rnd3 Cooper Beebe
They liked Cooper Beebe enough to skip the value, taking him in slot 96. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick114 Rnd4 Cedric Gray
A straight-up fair deal on Cedric Gray at No. 114, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick116 Rnd4 Khyree Jackson
By-the-book stuff, Khyree Jackson at the Round 4 slot squarely in line with his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick121 Rnd4 James Williams
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on James Williams. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick155 Rnd5 Justin Rogers
They paid up for Justin Rogers at pick 155 when waiting would have done the job. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick195 Rnd6 Trey Knox
Trey Knox slid further than he should have, and pick 195 is lovely value for the tight end. The roster fit checks out.
Pick211 Rnd6 Roger Rosengarten
Roger Rosengarten slipping to Round 6, Pick 36 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick237 Rnd7 Fentrell Cypress II
Nothing to complain about; Fentrell Cypress II went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
