The steal of the weekend belongs to the Jaguars and McClellan: B-. Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Jase McClellan got past him. The Jaguars do not have to explain a thing at No. 237.
The safety hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Orhorhoro has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. They went 7 of 9 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
A fair-value weekend of trading, no edge to be found.
Good work on the whole, with safety the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick24
Rnd1
Brian Thomas Jr.
In pick No. 24 they get a true top target at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick48
Rnd2
T'Vondre Sweat
T'Vondre Sweat in No. 48 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick56
Rnd2
Ruke Orhorhoro
Ruke Orhorhoro at the 56th pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick79
Rnd3
Josh Newton
By-the-book stuff, Josh Newton at pick 79 squarely in line with his ranking. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick114
Rnd4
Leonard Taylor III
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Leonard Taylor III. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick116
Rnd4
Kris Abrams-Draine
Kris Abrams-Draine at Round 4, Pick 16 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick155
Rnd5
Ty'Ron Hopper
No edge and no loss on Ty'Ron Hopper in the 155th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick195
Rnd6
Christian Jones
A straight-up fair deal on Christian Jones at slot 195, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick211
Rnd6
Jared Wiley
Jared Wiley at slot 211 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick237
Rnd7
Jase McClellan
Jase McClellan in pick 237 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. It fills a real need, too.
