FutureB-
More right than wrong for the 49ers, and a B to prove it. The 49ers torched the value chart for Oronde Gadsden II, taking him 28 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.
However the rest shakes out, Edwards at that price is a win they earned. The dealing nudged the ledger their way without much fuss. They went 8 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Trading back for volume was the quiet throughline of their weekend.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick25
Rnd1
Princely Umanmielen
In the 25th overall pick they get a bendy edge with upside, reach and all. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick33
Rnd2
Walter Nolen
Walter Nolen at slot 33 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick43
Rnd2
Jalon Walker
Jalon Walker at Round 2, Pick 11 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It fills a real need, too.
Pick75
Rnd3
Maxwell Hairston
They did well to land Maxwell Hairston in No. 75, just ahead of his grade. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick89
Rnd3
Jayden Higgins
Taking Jayden Higgins in the 89th pick is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick94
Rnd3
Anthony Belton
Anthony Belton at pick 94 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick100
Rnd3
Jordan Phillips
No drama and no debate, Jordan Phillips went about where he belonged in pick 100. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick113
Rnd4
Jamaree Caldwell
They paid a round early for Jamaree Caldwell in No. 113, more than the board wanted. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick138
Rnd4
Jonas Sanker
Fair-plus on Jonas Sanker, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick147
Rnd5
Tyler Shough
Good price on Tyler Shough in the Round 5 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick160
Rnd5
JJ Pegues
JJ Pegues at the 160th pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick166
Rnd5
Oronde Gadsden II
This one needs a full-page explanation: Oronde Gadsden II in slot 166, miles early. The roster fit checks out.
Pick227
Rnd7
Donovan Edwards
They will replay Donovan Edwards at pick No. 227 for years; that is how good the value is. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick249
Rnd7
Isaac TeSlaa
Isaac TeSlaa in Round 7, Pick 33 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick252
Rnd7
Hayden Conner
A reach on Hayden Conner in the 252nd overall pick; the board had better options right there. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
