Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall B
ValueB NeedB+ TradesB- FutureB-
Good, not great, for the Cowboys: B.

There is conviction, and then there is this. The Cowboys took Dont'e Thornton Jr. a full 36 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.

Fidone II at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.

Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 7 of 8 of the wish list covered.

Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.

Pick Analysis
Pick12 Rnd1 Ashton Jeanty
In slot 12 they get an every-down engine for the run game, and a steal at that.
Pick44 Rnd2 Tyler Booker
They let Tyler Booker come to them and pounced at pick No. 44. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick76 Rnd3 Carson Schwesinger
Carson Schwesinger at Round 3, Pick 12 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the linebacker. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick149 Rnd5 Dont'e Thornton Jr.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Dont'e Thornton Jr. this early at No. 149. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick174 Rnd5 CJ West
CJ West at pick 174 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick204 Rnd6 Jaylen Reed
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Jaylen Reed at the 204th overall pick is the proof. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick211 Rnd6 Jay Toia
Jay Toia at the 211th pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick217 Rnd7 Carson Vinson
Carson Vinson in pick No. 217 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick239 Rnd7 Thomas Fidone II
They will replay Thomas Fidone II at pick 239 for years; that is how good the value is. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick247 Rnd7 Jabbar Muhammad
No edge and no loss on Jabbar Muhammad in No. 247; it is a wash and a sensible one. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
