Draft Grade — Browns
Overall
C+
ValueD+
NeedB
TradesA+
FutureD
A passer of the future in Howard, and a C+, for the Browns. Nobody else had Jordan Hancock anywhere near No. 111. The Browns did, by 105 spots, and that gap is the whole story. A weekend of give and take that grades a C+.
So much rides on Will Howard that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Warren.
In the end, one you will need a couple of seasons to truly judge.
Pick Analysis
Pick25
Rnd1
Donovan Ezeiruaku
In the 25th pick they get a double-digit-sack hope, a steep price for the projection. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick31
Rnd1
Nick Emmanwori
The board had Nick Emmanwori higher than Round 1, Pick 31, and the safety fell to them anyway. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick32
Rnd1
Will Howard
In No. 32 they get a franchise quarterback, though the board says they badly overpaid. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick39
Rnd2
Luther Burden III
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Luther Burden III at the Round 2 slot is the proof. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick41
Rnd2
Tyler Warren
They barely believed it either: Tyler Warren still on the board at slot 41. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick50
Rnd2
Alfred Collins
Alfred Collins at the 50th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick56
Rnd2
TreVeyon Henderson
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on TreVeyon Henderson. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick57
Rnd2
Demetrius Knight Jr.
A straight-up fair deal on Demetrius Knight Jr. at Round 2, Pick 25, value and slot in agreement. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick58
Rnd2
Charles Grant
A big swing on Charles Grant at slot 58, well ahead of any board in the building. It fills a real need, too.
Pick67
Rnd3
Jack Bech
No drama and no debate, Jack Bech went about where he belonged in the 67th overall pick. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick82
Rnd3
Zy Alexander
A reach for Zy Alexander in pick No. 82; a little patience would have been rewarded. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick92
Rnd3
Cody Simon
This one needs a full-page explanation: Cody Simon in the 92nd pick, miles early. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick94
Rnd3
Clay Webb
They left a pile of value on the table to take Clay Webb this early at the Round 3 slot. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick95
Rnd3
Kevin Winston Jr.
By-the-book stuff, Kevin Winston Jr. at pick 95 squarely in line with his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick109
Rnd4
Addison West
They reached a country mile for Addison West at the 109th pick, and the board is aghast. The roster fit checks out.
Pick111
Rnd4
Jordan Hancock
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jordan Hancock well ahead of where he belonged. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick114
Rnd4
Oronde Gadsden II
They talked themselves into Oronde Gadsden II at No. 114, and the board did not agree. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick117
Rnd4
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
Value said wait; Dont'e Thornton Jr. in slot 117 says they were not listening. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick121
Rnd4
Ben Sauls
Ben Sauls at pick No. 121 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Pick132
Rnd4
Ollie Gordon II
Ollie Gordon II in Round 4, Pick 30 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick134
Rnd4
Tyler Shough
They paid a round early for Tyler Shough in the Round 4 slot, more than the board wanted. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick148
Rnd5
Willie Lampkin
Willie Lampkin at the 148th overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick151
Rnd5
Mello Dotson
They let Mello Dotson come to them and pounced at No. 151. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick166
Rnd5
Ty Hamilton
Ty Hamilton in pick No. 166 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick169
Rnd5
Jack Kiser
Jack Kiser at Round 5, Pick 31 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick179
Rnd6
Luke Elzinga
A real head-scratcher, Luke Elzinga in pick 179 is miles ahead of his ranking. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick235
Rnd7
Bryson Nesbit
A wild overpay on Bryson Nesbit in the 235th overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick255
Rnd7
Thor Griffith
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Thor Griffith. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
