Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall
B-
ValueB-
NeedB-
TradesB-
FutureB-
The Commanders let McAlister fall and pounced. Final grade: B-. Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Eric McAlister got past him. The Commanders do not have to explain a thing at No. 223. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
The tight end hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. Nearly every premium pick went to that side of the ball.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick7
Rnd1
Sonny Styles
In slot 7 they get a downhill thumper at linebacker at fair value.
Pick71
Rnd3
Antonio Williams
Antonio Williams in Round 3, Pick 7 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick147
Rnd5
Parker Brailsford
Value with a capital V on Parker Brailsford in the 147th overall pick, a genuine coup. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick187
Rnd6
Domani Jackson
Domani Jackson at pick 187 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick209
Rnd6
VJ Payne
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and VJ Payne at No. 209 is the proof. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick223
Rnd7
Eric McAlister
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Eric McAlister in the 223rd pick, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
