Skruger DRAFTING FOR THEPanthers

Draft Grade — Panthers
Overall

FutureB-
Nothing loud, just a tidy B- for the Panthers. You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Panthers did exactly that with Sai'vion Jones in slot 114. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.
That is a wide receiver worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. A whole weekend of picks and cornerback is somehow still a want.
On the needs board they went 3 of 9, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the cornerback spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick8
Rnd1
Mykel Williams
In the Round 1 slot they get juice off the edge, though they paid up to get him. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick57
Rnd2
Jared Ivey
Jared Ivey at No. 57 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick74
Rnd3
Demetrius Knight Jr.
They read the board right and Demetrius Knight Jr. was the payoff at Round 3, Pick 10. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick111
Rnd4
Savion Williams
Savion Williams in pick 111 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick114
Rnd4
Sai'vion Jones
This one needs a full-page explanation: Sai'vion Jones in pick No. 114, miles early. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick140
Rnd5
Jah Joyner
A wild overpay on Jah Joyner in slot 140, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick146
Rnd5
Antwaun Powell-Ryland
The board had cheaper options than Antwaun Powell-Ryland at the 146th overall pick, and it noticed. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick163
Rnd5
Elijah Roberts
A real head-scratcher, Elijah Roberts in slot 163 is miles ahead of his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
