The Raiders cashed the board's mistake on Thornton Jr.: B+. You could see the war room lean forward. Dont'e Thornton Jr. at the Round 6 slot is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did.
The phones were where this weekend was really won. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
The veteran additions, Caelen Carson chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not. They will need Watts to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick Analysis
Pick21
Rnd1
Jahdae Barron
In the Round 1 slot they get a potential shutdown corner, and a steal at that. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick33
Rnd2
Jihaad Campbell
Jihaad Campbell at the 33rd overall pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick34
Rnd2
Emeka Egbuka
Value with a capital V on Emeka Egbuka in pick No. 34, a genuine coup. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick37
Rnd2
Xavier Watts
A reach on Xavier Watts in slot 37; the board had better options right there. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick44
Rnd2
Aireontae Ersery
No drama and no debate, Aireontae Ersery went about where he belonged in Round 2, Pick 12. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick68
Rnd3
TreVeyon Henderson
TreVeyon Henderson at No. 68 is money in the bank, a running back taken below his worth. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick108
Rnd4
Isaiah Bond
Circle this one: Isaiah Bond at pick 108 is a fall that decides a draft. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick143
Rnd5
Bhayshul Tuten
They paid a round early for Bhayshul Tuten in the 143rd pick, more than the board wanted. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick180
Rnd6
Raheim Sanders
Taking Raheim Sanders in pick 180 is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. It fills a real need, too.
Pick213
Rnd6
Dont'e Thornton Jr.
The board fumbled Dont'e Thornton Jr. all the way to the Round 6 slot, and they scooped it up. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick215
Rnd6
JJ Pegues
JJ Pegues in slot 215 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
