The Cowboys cashed the board's mistake on Cook: D-.

You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Cowboys did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. Too much went sideways, and the D- is the honest tally.

That linebacker hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Every board in the league had Howell lower, and that gap is the story.

With linebacker and tight end unsolved, spending premium capital on edge rusher is the choice that costs them. Landing Cook that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.

Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, linebacker very much included.

Emery Jones Jr. at No. 39 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.

Mykel Williams slid further than he should have, and slot 49 is lovely value for the edge rusher. A minor need, but a need all the same.

Tre Harris at pick No. 53 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
