Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall
B+
ValueB
NeedB
TradesA+
FutureB
The Commanders let Washington fall and pounced. Final grade: B+. The trade table was a mismatch, and the Commanders were on the right end of it, hauling in a fortune in surplus value.
Landing Washington that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. That tight end hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but tight end.
Pick Analysis
Pick13
Rnd1
Dallas Turner
In pick 13 they get juice off the edge. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick36
Rnd2
Troy Fautanu
Troy Fautanu in the 36th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick40
Rnd2
Chop Robinson
Chop Robinson at Round 2, Pick 8 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick49
Rnd2
J.J. McCarthy
J.J. McCarthy at the 49th pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The roster fit checks out.
Pick67
Rnd3
Rod Moore
Rod Moore in the Round 3 slot is fair value, right on his grade. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick100
Rnd3
Dominick Puni
Dominick Puni at pick No. 100 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick102
Rnd4
Trey Benson
You do not let a running back like Trey Benson reach pick 102 and blink. They did not. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick141
Rnd5
Javion Cohen
Javion Cohen at No. 141 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick173
Rnd5
Joe Milton III
They barely believed it either: Joe Milton III still on the board at the 173rd pick. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick181
Rnd6
Malik Washington
Taking Malik Washington in Round 6, Pick 6 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick223
Rnd7
Jordan Magee
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jordan Magee in the 223rd overall pick. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick254
Rnd7
Ja'Had Carter
Value with a capital V on Ja'Had Carter in the Round 7 slot, a genuine coup. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
