Draft Grade — Cowboys
Overall
D
ValueC+
NeedB-
TradesF
FutureD-
A costly weekend of dealing drags the Cowboys to a D. They will call it conviction in the building and a reach everywhere else: Da'Shawn Womack, 105 picks early at the Round 6 slot. It grades a D, and the process earned it.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. The Allar pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not. On the needs board they went 8 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.
Pick Analysis
Pick29
Rnd1
Arvell Reese
In No. 29 they get a downhill thumper at linebacker, and a steal at that. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick32
Rnd1
Kayden McDonald
In pick No. 32 they get a load in the middle. A real need, handled.
Pick45
Rnd2
Anthony Hill Jr.
Anthony Hill Jr. at the Round 2 slot is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the linebacker. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick52
Rnd2
Jake Slaughter
A slide stopped in slot 52, with Jake Slaughter worth more than the price. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick56
Rnd2
Elijah Sarratt
They did well to land Elijah Sarratt in pick 56, just ahead of his grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick64
Rnd2
Xavier Chaplin
A big swing on Xavier Chaplin at the 64th overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick83
Rnd3
Antonio Williams
Nice patience on Antonio Williams, who had no business lasting to Round 3, Pick 19. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick87
Rnd3
Monroe Freeling
Monroe Freeling at the Round 3 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick89
Rnd3
Michael Taaffe
Michael Taaffe in pick No. 89 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick96
Rnd3
Zakee Wheatley
Fair-plus on Zakee Wheatley, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick100
Rnd3
Malachi Fields
Value with a capital V on Malachi Fields in slot 100, a genuine coup. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick103
Rnd4
Jaishawn Barham
They liked Jaishawn Barham enough to skip the value, taking him in the 103rd overall pick. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick104
Rnd4
D'Angelo Ponds
They took D'Angelo Ponds at par in pick 104, which is nothing to complain about. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick105
Rnd4
A.J. Haulcy
You do not let a safety like A.J. Haulcy reach the 105th pick and blink. They did not. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Pick112
Rnd4
Chase Bisontis
A reach for Chase Bisontis in the 112th overall pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick114
Rnd4
Nico Iamaleava
Nico Iamaleava at Round 4, Pick 14 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick121
Rnd4
Derrick Moore
Value said wait; Derrick Moore in pick 121 says they were not listening. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick122
Rnd4
Jude Bowry
Jude Bowry at pick No. 122 is a conviction pick that outran the value. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick128
Rnd4
Bray Hubbard
Bray Hubbard in the 128th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
Pick130
Rnd4
Zachariah Branch
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Zachariah Branch at slot 130 is the proof. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick132
Rnd4
Iapani Laloulu
They left a pile of value on the table to take Iapani Laloulu this early at No. 132. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick136
Rnd4
Zane Durant
They reached a country mile for Zane Durant at the Round 4 slot, and the board is aghast. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick139
Rnd4
DJ Campbell
DJ Campbell in No. 139 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick142
Rnd5
David Oke
A premium they did not need to pay, David Oke a notch or two before his time. The roster fit checks out.
Pick144
Rnd5
Jyaire Hill
A clean, defensible pick in the 144th pick with a little surplus value in Jyaire Hill. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick145
Rnd5
Darius Taylor
This one needs a full-page explanation: Darius Taylor in slot 145, miles early. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick148
Rnd5
Terion Stewart
Terion Stewart in the 148th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It fills a real need, too.
Pick149
Rnd5
Le'Veon Moss
Le'Veon Moss at Round 5, Pick 8 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick154
Rnd5
Makhi Hughes
They reached into another round for Makhi Hughes, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick155
Rnd5
Drew Allar
Circle this one: Drew Allar at pick 155 is a fall that decides a draft. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick161
Rnd5
Gracen Halton
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Gracen Halton. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick162
Rnd5
Terrance Carter Jr.
Terrance Carter Jr. at pick 162 is money in the bank, a tight end taken below his worth. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick167
Rnd5
Bear Alexander
A real head-scratcher, Bear Alexander in the Round 5 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick173
Rnd5
Trey Zuhn III
They talked themselves into Trey Zuhn III at No. 173, and the board did not agree. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick174
Rnd5
Trebor Pena
Trebor Pena at the 174th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick177
Rnd5
Isaac Smith
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Isaac Smith at Round 5, Pick 36. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick178
Rnd5
CJ Daniels
They let CJ Daniels come to them and pounced at slot 178. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick181
Rnd6
Mark Fletcher Jr.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Mark Fletcher Jr. well ahead of where he belonged. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick182
Rnd6
Rayshaun Benny
A conviction pick on Rayshaun Benny at the 182nd overall pick that the board grades a round light. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick186
Rnd6
James Smith
A wild overpay on James Smith in pick 186, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick196
Rnd6
Da'Shawn Womack
Da'Shawn Womack at Round 6, Pick 16 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Pick210
Rnd6
Daevin Hobbs
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Daevin Hobbs well ahead of where he belonged. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick218
Rnd7
Fernando Carmona
They reached into another round for Fernando Carmona, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick224
Rnd7
Jordan Hall
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jordan Hall in No. 224, miles early. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick229
Rnd7
Jalen Thompson
They talked themselves into Jalen Thompson at the 229th pick, and the board did not agree. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Pick231
Rnd7
Kelby Collins
Kelby Collins at slot 231 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Pick241
Rnd7
Jordan White
Jordan White in slot 241 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick251
Rnd7
Micah Morris
Micah Morris in the 251st overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick255
Rnd7
Evan Tengesdahl
A big swing on Evan Tengesdahl at No. 255, well ahead of any board in the building. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
