FutureB+
A passer of the future in Daniels, and a B+, for the Bears. The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Bears spent their marquee pick on Jayden Daniels, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback. No fireworks, but a solid B+.
If Bortolini pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. Leaving running back unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Getting Suamataia where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick2
Rnd1
Jayden Daniels
In the 2nd pick they get a passer to set the clock by. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick11
Rnd1
Byron Murphy II
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Byron Murphy II. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick36
Rnd2
Darius Robinson
They paid sticker price for Darius Robinson in the 36th overall pick, and that is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick75
Rnd3
Kingsley Suamataia
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Kingsley Suamataia at pick 75. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick78
Rnd3
Brenden Rice
Value said wait; Brenden Rice in slot 78 says they were not listening. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick108
Rnd4
Cole Bishop
Cole Bishop at pick No. 108 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick121
Rnd4
Theo Johnson
No edge and no loss on Theo Johnson in Round 4, Pick 21; it is a wash and a sensible one. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick122
Rnd4
Elijah Jones
Elijah Jones at the Round 4 slot is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick129
Rnd4
Tanor Bortolini
Tanor Bortolini at slot 129 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The roster fit checks out.
Pick207
Rnd6
Jalen Coker
A real head-scratcher, Jalen Coker in the 207th overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
Pick222
Rnd7
JD Bertrand
A straight-up fair deal on JD Bertrand at Round 7, Pick 2, value and slot in agreement. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
