Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall
B+
ValueB
NeedB-
TradesA+
FutureA-
Nobody dealt better than the Commanders this weekend: B+. The real work happened on the phones. The Commanders fleeced their trade partners, turning their picks into a noticeably bigger pile than they started with. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B+.
That tight end hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The Alexander pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
The Campbell pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. The Commanders clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick Analysis
Pick7
Rnd1
Jeremiyah Love
In the 7th pick they get a workhorse for the backfield. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick36
Rnd2
Anthony Hill Jr.
Anthony Hill Jr. in No. 36 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick57
Rnd2
A.J. Haulcy
They took A.J. Haulcy at par in Round 2, Pick 25, which is nothing to complain about. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick67
Rnd3
Antonio Williams
They read the board right and Antonio Williams was the payoff at pick No. 67. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick71
Rnd3
Anthony Lucas
They reached a country mile for Anthony Lucas at slot 71, and the board is aghast. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick102
Rnd4
Caden Curry
They paid sticker price for Caden Curry in the Round 4 slot, and that is fine. It fills a real need, too.
Pick117
Rnd4
Trinidad Chambliss
No edge and no loss on Trinidad Chambliss in the 117th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick129
Rnd4
Chase Bisontis
Chase Bisontis slid further than he should have, and pick 129 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick134
Rnd4
Hezekiah Masses
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Hezekiah Masses at No. 134. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick145
Rnd5
Max Iheanachor
Good price on Max Iheanachor in pick No. 145, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick163
Rnd5
Ted Hurst
They let Ted Hurst come to them and pounced at pick 163. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick177
Rnd5
DJ Campbell
A slide stopped in the Round 5 slot, with DJ Campbell worth more than the price. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick180
Rnd6
Bud Clark
Bud Clark in the 180th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick183
Rnd6
Pat Coogan
A quiet steal in the 183rd pick: Pat Coogan for less than the market said. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick185
Rnd6
Thaddeus Dixon
No drama and no debate, Thaddeus Dixon went about where he belonged in slot 185. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick196
Rnd6
Kalil Alexander
Kalil Alexander in Round 6, Pick 17 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick219
Rnd7
Barion Brown
Nice patience on Barion Brown, who had no business lasting to Round 7, Pick 3. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick221
Rnd7
Keyron Crawford
Keyron Crawford at pick 221 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick223
Rnd7
Riley Mahlman
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Riley Mahlman. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick239
Rnd7
Jordan Hall
They liked Jordan Hall enough to skip the value, taking him in No. 239. The roster fit checks out.
Pick241
Rnd7
Micah Morris
A straight-up fair deal on Micah Morris at the 241st overall pick, value and slot in agreement. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
