FutureB-
The phones sank the 49ers this weekend: D-. The move everyone will second-guess came early. The 49ers reached some 36 spots for Javion Cohen, and value like that does not grow back. A D- that will need time and luck to look better.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. If one pick saves this weekend, it is McCaffrey.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, interior defensive lineman very much included.
Pick Analysis
Pick17
Rnd1
JC Latham
In the 17th pick they get a long-term starter on the line. The biggest hole, addressed.
Pick18
Rnd1
Amarius Mims
No edge and no loss on Amarius Mims in the 18th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Pick31
Rnd1
Chop Robinson
In No. 31 they get a bendy edge with upside, and a steal at that. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick63
Rnd2
Jaden Hicks
A real head-scratcher, Jaden Hicks in Round 2, Pick 31 is miles ahead of his ranking. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick94
Rnd3
Javon Baker
Fair-plus on Javon Baker, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick96
Rnd3
Caelen Carson
Caelen Carson in pick No. 96 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick124
Rnd4
Johnny Wilson
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Johnny Wilson. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick131
Rnd4
Ben Sinnott
A straight-up fair deal on Ben Sinnott at slot 131, value and slot in agreement. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick133
Rnd4
Javion Cohen
Javion Cohen at the 133rd overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick176
Rnd6
Luke McCaffrey
Luke McCaffrey in pick No. 176 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick211
Rnd6
Frank Gore Jr.
They liked Frank Gore Jr. enough to skip the value, taking him in the 211th pick. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick215
Rnd6
Ryan Flournoy
Ryan Flournoy slipping to Round 6, Pick 40 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick251
Rnd7
Nathan Thomas
Circle this one: Nathan Thomas at pick 251 is a fall that decides a draft. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
