Draft Grade — Commanders
Overall
B+
ValueB
NeedB
TradesA+
FutureB-
The Commanders answered their biggest question with Maye. Grade: B+. The Commanders spent the pick that matters most on Drake Maye, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. They moved the roster forward and banked a B+ for it.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. They banked enough surplus on Newton to cover a lot of smaller sins.
They punted on wide receiver, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. They will need Ogunbiyi to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
Good work on the whole, with wide receiver the one box left unchecked.
Pick Analysis
Pick6
Rnd1
Drake Maye
In the Round 1 slot they get a long-term answer under center. A real need, handled.
Pick36
Rnd2
Jackson Powers-Johnson
They paid a round early for Jackson Powers-Johnson in Round 2, Pick 4, more than the board wanted. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick39
Rnd2
Kamari Lassiter
Kamari Lassiter slipping to No. 39 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick40
Rnd2
Tyler Guyton
No drama and no debate, Tyler Guyton went about where he belonged in the 40th pick. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick47
Rnd2
Ja'Tavion Sanders
Ja'Tavion Sanders at the 47th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick67
Rnd3
Kingsley Suamataia
Nice patience on Kingsley Suamataia, who had no business lasting to slot 67. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick101
Rnd4
Marist Liufau
A tidy bit of business in pick 101, where Marist Liufau graded well above the range. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick103
Rnd4
Josh Newton
Josh Newton in pick No. 103 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick138
Rnd5
Beaux Limmer
By-the-book stuff, Beaux Limmer at the Round 5 slot squarely in line with his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick181
Rnd6
Aki Ogunbiyi
Aki Ogunbiyi at slot 181 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick220
Rnd6
Myles Jones
Myles Jones in No. 220 is fair value, right on his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
