FutureA+
A passer of the future in Maye, and a D+, for the Texans. The trade table was where it all came apart. The Texans shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill.
If Bullock pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. Everything downstream of Drake Maye depends on Drake Maye, and the building knows it.
For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Brade.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and edge rusher is still a hole.
Pick Analysis
Pick3
Rnd1
Drake Maye
In slot 3 they get the arm they will build around at fair value. A real need, handled.
Pick20
Rnd1
Brock Bowers
In pick 20 they get a mismatch in the passing game, and a steal at that. A clean fit for the roster.
Pick35
Rnd2
Ladd McConkey
Ladd McConkey in Round 2, Pick 3 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick59
Rnd2
Calen Bullock
A big swing on Calen Bullock at the Round 2 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick81
Rnd3
Trey Benson
Nice patience on Trey Benson, who had no business lasting to pick No. 81. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick104
Rnd4
Christian Mahogany
Nothing to complain about; Christian Mahogany went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick108
Rnd4
Caelen Carson
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Caelen Carson at the 108th pick is the proof. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Pick138
Rnd5
Javon Foster
The board had Javon Foster higher than No. 138, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick177
Rnd6
Beau Brade
Taking Beau Brade in the 177th overall pick is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Pick188
Rnd6
Sione Vaki
Sione Vaki at No. 188 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Pick232
Rnd7
Jackson Sirmon
Jackson Sirmon in slot 232 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick238
Rnd7
Tarheeb Still
A slide stopped in pick No. 238, with Tarheeb Still worth more than the price. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Pick247
Rnd7
Trente Jones
They did well to land Trente Jones in the Round 7 slot, just ahead of his grade. The roster fit checks out.
Pick249
Rnd7
Daijun Edwards
A quiet steal in the 249th pick: Daijun Edwards for less than the market said. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
