Draft Grade — Bears
Overall C
ValueF NeedB TradesD FutureA
A passer of the future in McCarthy, and a C, for the Bears.

The Bears clearly saw something nobody else did in AJ Barner, taking him 111 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced.

J.J. McCarthy is the bet, and the class will be judged on how it pays off. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. Landing Smith that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.

It grades out a shrug today, with plenty of room to move either way.

Pick Analysis
Pick1 Rnd1 J.J. McCarthy
Value said wait; J.J. McCarthy in the 1st pick says they were not listening. The roster fit checks out.
Pick33 Rnd2 Roman Wilson
Roman Wilson at the 33rd overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It fills a real need, too.
Pick65 Rnd3 Blake Corum
Blake Corum at pick 65 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick75 Rnd3 AJ Barner
They talked themselves into AJ Barner at slot 75, and the board did not agree. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick101 Rnd4 Tykee Smith
A tidy little value on Tykee Smith in the Round 4 slot, a step better than break-even. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Pick110 Rnd4 Drake Nugent
Drake Nugent in pick No. 110 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick127 Rnd4 Ainias Smith
Ainias Smith at pick No. 127 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick146 Rnd5 Nehemiah Pritchett
Nehemiah Pritchett at pick 146 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick186 Rnd6 Braiden McGregor
They went early on Braiden McGregor in the 186th overall pick, and the value did not follow. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick232 Rnd7 J.J. Weaver
Value with a capital V on J.J. Weaver in Round 7, Pick 12, a genuine coup. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
