Draft Grade — Jets
Overall B
ValueB NeedB+ TradesB- FutureB-
Quarterback settled, Mendoza in the fold, and a B for the Jets.

The tape said wait; the Jets did not. Roman Hemby went at the 192nd pick, a good 76 picks before the board was ready. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.

They have staked the next five years on Fernando Mendoza, which is the only story that really matters here. It is not that Allen is a bad player; it is that the Jets had louder needs to answer first. The Wheatley pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.

If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through cornerback.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.

Pick Analysis
Pick2 Rnd1 Fernando Mendoza
In the Round 1 slot they get their guy under center for the next decade. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Pick16 Rnd1 Arvell Reese
In slot 16 they get a three-down second-level presence, and a steal at that. More want than need.
Pick33 Rnd2 Olaivavega Ioane
A tidy bit of business in pick No. 33, where Olaivavega Ioane graded well above the range. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Pick48 Rnd2 CJ Allen
A curious use of No. 48. Cornerback and edge rusher needed the pick; a linebacker in CJ Allen did not.
Pick103 Rnd4 Zakee Wheatley
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Zakee Wheatley in Round 4, Pick 3, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick114 Rnd4 Justin Joly
Value with a capital V on Justin Joly in the 114th pick, a genuine coup. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Pick175 Rnd5 Eric McAlister
Good price on Eric McAlister in pick 175, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick178 Rnd5 Gracen Halton
A clean, defensible pick in pick No. 178 with a little surplus value in Gracen Halton. The roster fit checks out.
Pick192 Rnd6 Roman Hemby
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Roman Hemby. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick206 Rnd6 Diego Pavia
A slide stopped in No. 206, with Diego Pavia worth more than the price. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick209 Rnd6 Fernando Carmona
Fernando Carmona at the 209th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick218 Rnd7 J. Michael Sturdivant
A straight-up fair deal on J. Michael Sturdivant at slot 218, value and slot in agreement. It fills a real need, too.
Pick242 Rnd7 Will Kacmarek
Will Kacmarek in Round 7, Pick 26 is fair value, right on his grade. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
