FutureA+
Nobody dealt better than the Texans this weekend: A-. The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Texans reached some 79 spots for Sam Hartman, and value like that does not grow back. The sum of the weekend is a deserved A-.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. The Bullock pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at wide receiver and tight end. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped wide receiver, which is a strange place to end up.
Hart falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Cooper Beebe and all.
Pick Analysis
Pick60
Rnd2
Cooper Beebe
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Cooper Beebe. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Pick67
Rnd3
Max Melton
They paid sticker price for Max Melton in Round 3, Pick 3, and that is fine. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Pick69
Rnd3
Kingsley Suamataia
A straight-up fair deal on Kingsley Suamataia at the 69th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick71
Rnd3
Renardo Green
No drama and no debate, Renardo Green went about where he belonged in the Round 3 slot. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Pick74
Rnd3
Michael Hall Jr.
No edge and no loss on Michael Hall Jr. in pick 74; it is a wash and a sensible one. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick76
Rnd3
Jeremiah Trotter Jr.
They took Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at par in No. 76, which is nothing to complain about. The roster fit checks out.
Pick84
Rnd3
Christian Mahogany
A reach on Christian Mahogany in the 84th overall pick; the board had better options right there. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick85
Rnd3
Calen Bullock
They bypassed pressing needs at wide receiver and tight end to take Calen Bullock, a safety that was not the priority.
Pick118
Rnd4
Audric Estime
Audric Estime in the 118th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Pick123
Rnd4
Cedric Gray
Cedric Gray at pick 123 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Pick130
Rnd4
Cam Hart
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending No. 130 on Cam Hart with wide receiver and tight end unsolved.
Pick147
Rnd5
Nelson Ceaser
Nelson Ceaser at the Round 5 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick170
Rnd5
James Williams
James Williams at pick No. 170 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick171
Rnd5
Nathan Thomas
Nathan Thomas in slot 171 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick174
Rnd5
Sam Hartman
Sam Hartman at the 174th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
