Draft Grade — Texans
Overall B-
ValueC+ NeedB+ TradesB- FutureB-
No fireworks, just a tidy B- for the Texans.

There is conviction, and then there is this. The Texans took Isaac TeSlaa a full 34 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.

They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. Landing Alexander that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.

They left with running back solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

Pick Analysis
Pick25 Rnd1 Luther Burden III
In slot 25 they get a No. 1 receiver at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick58 Rnd2 Donovan Jackson
No edge and no loss on Donovan Jackson in the Round 2 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick79 Rnd3 Charles Grant
A conviction pick on Charles Grant at No. 79 that the board grades a round light. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick103 Rnd4 Darius Alexander
Darius Alexander at the 103rd pick is money in the bank, a interior defensive lineman taken below his worth. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Pick125 Rnd4 Brashard Smith
They liked Brashard Smith enough to skip the value, taking him in the 125th overall pick. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Pick166 Rnd5 Kyle Williams
By-the-book stuff, Kyle Williams at pick 166 squarely in line with his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Pick178 Rnd6 Jack Nelson
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jack Nelson. It fills a real need, too.
Pick199 Rnd6 Isaac TeSlaa
Isaac TeSlaa at pick No. 199 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Pick236 Rnd7 Kitan Crawford
Kitan Crawford at the 236th pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Pick241 Rnd7 Teddye Buchanan
They jumped the gun on Teddye Buchanan, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
