FutureA+
Larceny in the Round 5 slot lands the Texans a B+, Smith and all. Somebody in No. 174 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Texans sat still while Brashard Smith, the No. 134 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.
Conner has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The future picks help the war chest more than the win-now roster.
Running back is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick Analysis
Pick25
Rnd1
Matthew Golden
In pick 25 they get a true top target, outstanding value to boot. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Pick66
Rnd3
Donovan Jackson
No edge and no loss on Donovan Jackson in pick No. 66; it is a wash and a sensible one. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Pick76
Rnd3
Jaylin Noel
Value with a capital V on Jaylin Noel in the 76th overall pick, a genuine coup. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick80
Rnd3
Ozzy Trapilo
Ozzy Trapilo in slot 80 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Pick151
Rnd5
Malachi Moore
They read the board right and Malachi Moore was the payoff at the 151st pick. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Pick166
Rnd5
Kyle Williams
Kyle Williams at Round 5, Pick 28 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick171
Rnd5
Willie Lampkin
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Willie Lampkin. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick174
Rnd5
Brashard Smith
Brashard Smith in the Round 5 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Pick236
Rnd7
Hayden Conner
Hayden Conner in the Round 7 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick241
Rnd7
Isaac TeSlaa
A clean, defensible pick in pick No. 241 with a little surplus value in Isaac TeSlaa. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Pick247
Rnd7
Moliki Matavao
A real head-scratcher, Moliki Matavao in slot 247 is miles ahead of his ranking. A need, and now a little less of one.
Pick257
Rnd7
Teddye Buchanan
Teddye Buchanan at the 257th overall pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The roster fit checks out.
