Draft Grade — Texans
Overall
B
ValueB+
NeedB+
TradesB-
FutureB-
The Texans robbed the room for Mickens. Final grade: B. Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Texans were there to profit. R.J. Mickens, the No. 214 name on the board, should have been long gone before No. 241.
They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it. Running back is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick Analysis
Pick25
Rnd1
Matthew Golden
Value with a capital V on Matthew Golden in the 25th overall pick, a genuine coup. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Pick58
Rnd2
Kaleb Johnson
They read the board right and Kaleb Johnson was the payoff at pick No. 58. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Pick79
Rnd3
Elijah Arroyo
Elijah Arroyo in the Round 3 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Pick89
Rnd3
Ozzy Trapilo
A clean, defensible pick in Round 3, Pick 25 with a little surplus value in Ozzy Trapilo. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Pick166
Rnd5
Seth McLaughlin
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Seth McLaughlin. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Pick236
Rnd7
Isaac TeSlaa
Isaac TeSlaa at No. 236 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Pick241
Rnd7
R.J. Mickens
They barely believed it either: R.J. Mickens still on the board at slot 241. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
